Keane
Stay away from her.
My own words rang inside my head. I swallowed that bitter truth and made my way through the nearly abandoned grounds. Fire raged in the middle of the camp, sending sparkling embers into the night sky. The few guards left behind by Vavilion were huddled close together as they scanned the darkness for any hint of movement.
You don’t need her.
She was with Wilds and Ristt now. They’d protect her…better than I ever could. Still, it fucking burned not to touch her…it burned a lot.
This wasn’t meant to happen, not love…not to someone like me. But here it was, driving a hole through the center of my fucking chest.
She doesn’t want you.
Cold slipped from my nose as I walked. I probed the curve of my lip and found nothing. No, she didn’t want me. But there was a difference between need and want, and if I couldn’t be with her, then I’d give her the only thing I could…peace.
Peace from Vavilion.
And peace from me.
The opening of her tent flapped wildly with a sudden gust of wind. My steps stopped, heat clenched tight. A shift in the darkness inside. Was that her? Was she waiting…for me?
My body trembled, my resolve weak when it came to her.
The best thing you can do is to forget about her.
The darkness whispered inside, dragging to the surface all the things I’d done. Faces waited for me, memories of panicked cries as they pleaded for their lives.
Cold tickled my lip once more. I gave a sniff, dragging that emptiness back inside where it belonged, and turned from her tent, running smack into a guard.
“Watch it,” he snarled, observing the ale in his cup slap the sides before he lifted his gaze.
His eyes widened, head tilting as his focus moved up…and up, until he met my stare. There was a flinch and a swallow before he muttered, “Didn’t know it was you, Hexer.”
I scared him. I scared all of them. All the pretty mortals with their unblemished souls. If the idiot was waiting for me to speak, he’d be waiting a while.
Instead he gave up, just nodded slowly and stepped to the side as he headed for the fire once more. Night was here, and with it, the danger of this place.
It wasn’t us Hexers they needed to be careful of.
It was them…the reason we were here…the fucking Vampires.
“Keane,” Ristt called. He was one person I couldn’t stare down and ignore. “Where you headed, brother?”
“Out.”
“Hey.” He grabbed my arm, forcing me to stare at his hand until the bastard let go. “What’s going on with you?”
I didn’t want to look at him, I didn't want to see the spark of contentment in his eyes. I didn’t want to remember him…with her. “Nothing,” I forced the word and turned away.
“You really are a cold sonofabitch, aren’t you?”
I flinched at those words. They pressed against me like the tip of a blade, cutting slowly, making me feel every fucking word. “That’s me,” I snarled, and kept moving, past the tents to the other side of the campground…and into the dark.
